This is my OnePlus 7 Pro review and it is my first public review about a product that I owned. This review will not be discussing the product in technical-wise but rather more on my personal touch with OnePlus products.

I started using my first OnePlus product since September 2014. I don't remember how and where exactly I heard of OnePlus since they do not advertise their products in any major channels, but one thing I do remember is that I bought the OnePlus invitation code from one of the eBay sellers for about $20 USD. I know it sounded fishy but I still went with my gut to buy it without second thought. Minutes later after I placed the order, I received the invitation code via email and I used the code to buy  my first OnePlus 1 phone.

OnePlus 1 was a very great and powerful smartphone at that time, featuring a 5.5 inch FHD display screen, 13MP rear camera, 3GB RAM, 64GB Storage and over 3000 mAh battery. At that time, OnePlus 1 was definitely the flagship and flagship killer with no doubts. Plus, for a device with such high end specs, it only costed around $350 USD! Anyway, I was very happy with OnePlus 1 until OnePlus 5 was released.

It was around June 2017, about 3 years later after I got my first OnePlus 1. I don't consider myself a big fan of OnePlus, but I really do enjoy its blazingly fast and clean OS, not to mention the very affordable cost with such high-end specs. So when I heard of OnePlus 5, I knew I am going to get it for sure. OnePlus had a popup event in Manhattan, New York and it was just few miles away from the place I worked. After I took off from work, I decided to go there and have a look. The moment when I got there, I already saw a very long queue that basically surrounded the entire building blocks. People were very excited about it, I was too. It was such a long queue that it took me about 3 hours and half to finally get to the entrance. I got some free stuffs like T-shirts, notebooks and etc. while waiting in the queue. Finally, it was my turn and I bought the regular OnePlus 5 and before I left the event, I took a picture with OnePlus CEO, Carl Pei using my OnePlus 1. OnePlus 5 costed around $476 when I bought it, about $120+ more than OnePlus 1.

OnePlus 5 was a even faster and smoother smartphone than OnePlus 1. OnePlus 5 featured dual cameras (16MP and 20MP respectively) that claimed to take clearer and better photos (indeed). The front camera also bumped from 5MP to 16 MP. It also supported USB Type C and Dash Charge that allowed quicker charging. Though the display screen was still 5.5 inch with FHD, I found the display more clearer and vibrant comparing to OnePlus 1. Anyway, I totally had no issues with my OnePlus 5 at all (except some tiny matters).

2 years later (2019), OnePlus released its latest premium flagship smartphone - OnePlus 7 Pro. This time, OnePlus decided to roll out the ultimate specs smartphone featuring 6.67 inch 90 Hz refreshing rate screen, 3 cameras with 48MP main camera, warp charges, 4000 mAh battery, 8GB RAM, 256 GB storage, in-screen fingerprint sensor and etc. This year, I did not go to their popup event because it required ticket to get into event. It wasn't because I was a cheapskate person but because I wasn't quite sure if I should replace my OnePlus 5 with 7 Pro. After I checked their website and found out that they did offer trade-in program, that was the moment I knew I wanted this OnePlus 7 Pro. As a result, I traded in my old OnePlus 5 for $170. Thankfully, I still had my old OnePlus 1 with me at that time before my OnePlus 7 Pro arrived.

The whole trade-in process took almost a month to complete which was quite disappointing. I requested for trade-in on May 14, 2019 and I got the OnePlus container box from OnePlus few days later. I then shipped out my OnePlus 5 to them and they received it on May 23, 2019. They finished inspection and sent out the voucher of $170 to me on May 30, 2019. Once I got the voucher, I straight away placed the order but they did not process the order until a week later. On June 10, 2019, I finally got my OnePlus 7 Pro.

I was all hype about OnePlus 7 Pro before I got the phone. I watched a lot of Youtube videos about OnePlus 7 Pro reviews, updates and news. When I finally had OnePlus 7 Pro on my hand, I just realized that I wasn't that excited like I was earlier (perhaps it was some kind of psychological effects, you know, when you don't own something, you are craving for it so badly but when you finally own it, you just feel like meh...). Anyway, it was what I felt after I owned the phone. For sure, it was super fast, super smooth and super crystal clear. Knowing that it is just a phone, all of the hypes and excitements just went away.

Sure, getting such high-end smartphone for about $530 (I got the $699 model minus the $170 voucher from OnePlus 5) is definitely worth every penny. I have been using it for about a week now and I have no issues with it at all. Photos and videos taken are definitely much better than OnePlus 5, and OnePlus 7 Pro is definitely much faster and smoother than OnePlus 5. Battery capacity is huge and I don't need to charge it every day (hope this can still maintain for next few years).

Few complaints about the camera though:

  • Front camera video zooms in too much.
  • No smile detection capture in front camera.
  • Macro focus is bad (rear camera).
  • Coloring sometimes seems unreal (especially with HDR effect on).
  • The overall camera quanlity can be improved.
  • Video stabilization is bad (especially when shaking).

Well, that's all about it. I hope OnePlus 7 Pro will get better and better with software updates and I hope my love for OnePlus 7 Pro grows more and more each day.
